Designs, tests and builds its own patient moving and handling equipment, supplied to the NHS, care providers and home care through large trade partners.

Based in the West Midlands, this company is a design led manufacturer of medical furniture and patient handling equipment, working from a single leasehold site. It invents its own products, takes them through mechanical testing and clinical trials, and then builds them in house. Nine products have been created from a blank sheet of paper in four years, all of the designs owned outright because the development was self-funded.

The lead product is a reclining chair now specified by most NHS trusts in the UK. Trusts will not accept an alternative to it, and the company holds a manufacturing exclusivity agreement on the product with a major UK hospital equipment framework holder. A recently launched tilt in space bed/chair has no competing product against it and took a first order of £400,000 with no marketing and no formal launch. The rest of the range covers bath lift mechanisms, highback chairs and sit to stand chairs, all of which have now completed development.

Sales run through three trade customers, each many times the size of the company. Ninety per cent of revenue is repeat and average order value is £30,000 to £50,000. Most product reaches the end user through the NHS rental market, so demand does not depend on trust capital budgets.

The company has never advertised, never employed a salesperson and has never sold outside the UK and Ireland. Everything has come by word of mouth from people who saw the products in use and made contact themselves. Approaches have arrived from six overseas markets in the last twelve months and none have been taken up. The order book stands at more than £550,000 and the owner is holding sales back because the current site cannot keep pace with demand.
