Hi, I set up AFTA.ORG.UK and hold the trademark for Anti Fly-tipping Association and for the tagline (Polite to the planet) I have been involved in the waste industry for years and am well aware of the huge social and financial impact fly tipping creates here in the UK.
I set up AFTA with the view to running it full time but not to be, I am leaving for ASIA soon to pursue something I have been working on for the last two years so I am not in a position to give AFTA the time it requires.
I have done a lot of homework regarding associations, the closest business model to AFTA is BAR.CO.UK (British association of removers) The BAR market/membership is very small in comparison to the size of the UK waste industry, despite this BAR still managed to turn over 1.2 million with low overheads.
I have contacted the UK Environment agency to ask how many British companies currently hold a waste carriers license.
Over the last 3 years, 170,000 waste carriers licences were issued just in England, this does not include Scotland and Wales.
The market size is considerable. What is needed to take the business forward is a person good at telemarketing and marketing to raise the profile, neither of which is my strong point. Just 1,000 members paying around 250 per year is a lot of income per year and its regular income with very little overheads.
I would much prefer to keep control of a percentage but if the right offer is made I may just sell lock stock and barrel. Please read the AFTA.ORG.UK website to understand the model. A lot of local councils and government would no doubt be happy to get involved should the new owner network correctly.
Potential members include house clearance, man and van rubbish removers, cleaning companies, carpet fitters, plumbers, landscape gardeners, scrap metal dealers, skip hire, builders, and more.
