A few years back, I attended a Land Rover show where I took photographs of people driving shiny new Range Rovers and not so shiny old Land Rovers through water, mud and a variety of other obstacles. When every other driver stopped to ask me when the photos would be available to buy, I realised that a business opportunity had just presented itself.
By the time the next show came along, I had bought and equipped an event trailer and taken on some extra photographers, set up a web-site and 'eye4aphoto' was born. The business has grown to the point where it has actually got a bit too big for me to continue as a 'sideline' now, as my main career is running a busy Financial Adviser's practice in Suffolk and this summer we will be moving into new office premises due to continued expansion of that business. I will therefore not be able to commit enough time to the photography to do it justice ongoing so I have had to make the painful decision to sell eye4aphoto.
The trailer features a wrap-around worktop inside with plenty of space for printers, computers and other equipment. There is additional high level shelving at either end of the trailer. There are two separate front opening serving hatches that open upwards on gas filled struts to provide a natural sun/rain shelter for your customers.
The trailer is double axle (4 wheels) and is braked. It tows very well and is stable at motorway cruising speed. It has a brand new jockey wheel fitted to the A-frame, a standard ball and socket style tow hitch and standard electrical hook up for lights and indicators. There is a wind down foot at each corner and the unit is very stable when parked and all 4 feet are in position.
The trailer has an exterior electrical hook-up (standard camping and caravanning fitment) feeding six double 13 amp sockets at worktop level and nine multi-position spot lights (GU10 style fittings with low energy spot bulbs fitted). There is a full spec consumer unit with trip switches fitted. All electrics were installed by a professional electrician and the safety sign off paperwork is supplied. The elctrics run off 240v mains feed or a suitable generator. (We used Honda generators as they are a pure sine wave supply that does not 'spike' and ruin your computers).
The interior is painted white to keep it light and airy on hot days and it has laminated wood flooring. There is plenty of wall space for mounting sample photos. The trailer door and shutters are alarmed.
As you will see from our web site (which you will take over control of as part of the sale) we cover 4x4 events, our biggest being the annual Land Rover Max show. At a typical 4x4 off-road event, you can expect to take around £1, 000 a day on-site, most of which is in cash sales. However, you will need to gear up to take credit and debit cards too, as an increasing proportion of people want to pay by these methods. Events with larger numbers of participants/attendees will generate higher income levels.
Around 90% of your business will be done 'on site' at an event when people are excited about having driven the family 4x4 around a testing off-road course and want to see their vehicle ploughing through the mud or entering a river or lake with a big water splash! The web site is also geared up as an on-line shop and you will take more money in the weeks following an event from on-line sales. This business is totally portable and could be adapted to cover any type of event: Motorsport events, track day, Steam Engine Rally, Equestrian, school sports day, school prom night, corporate function, University Graduation day, etc. You name the event and you can cover it and sell photographs on site.
As the new business owner, the hosting and codes for the web site will be transferred to you and it is very easy to change the text to reflect the new ownership and to adapt the layout. I do most of my text entry myself, and verey rarely have to ask my web hosting company to change anything for me. Their fees and those for the domain name ownership are very reasonable.
I have contact details for 4 staff members who are all great photographers and who can also turn their hand to a bit of printing and customer sales work. Staff were employed on a day rate basis per event and I am sure they would love to work with the new owner.
I can also introduce the buyer to my contacts at the company that runs the biggest UK Land Rover show, which we covered last year. I am sure they would be happy for eye4aphoto to cover the event again in August 2011.
