It was founded in May 2011 by Antonia Joyce, who wanted the opportunity to do something she loved whilst working from home with her baby.
Following six months of market testing – on family and friends – the Horseshoe Bakery was launched.
The company name is generic so that trends in baking can be anticipated and followed without the name being too specific. Horseshoes are meant to bring good luck.
Within the last 10 months, the bakery has grown from strength to strength, turning over approximately £10, 000 and gaining some valued and loyal customers. There is enormous potential for further growth.
In the mix
The average vanilla cupcake costs around 10 pence for ingredients and the RRP is £1. 75. Up to 300 cupcakes can be made in one day by one person. Wedding cupcakes can be charged at a higher price, as can special requirements such as gluten or sugar free. The company is not VAT registered.
Strategic overview
From the outset, the strategy of the bakery was to become Beaconsfield’s local cupcake bakery, culminating in the opening of a shop. To achieve this, sampling was carried out with local businesses, which resulted in a lot of new business.
Unfortunately both Beaconsfield market and Beaconsfield farmers market already had cake stalls, as did all of the other local markets, (only one cake stall allowed at each market).
Cupcake heaven
As a result, I decided to concentrate on local summer fairs, the first of which was the Beaconsfield Country fair, which was a resounding success – I sold out within 2 hours and took home £700.
I went on to do the Chalfont St. Giles Country fair and then Christmas markets at Garston Manor, Waddeston Manor and the Beaconsfield festival of lights. These were very successful and also a relatively cheap way of getting the product direct to the consumer without the overheads of a shop.
I also partnered with an events company in Richmond and became their preferred supplier. I also registered with all the local childrens and wedding online directories, and have catered for four weddings. A further two weddings are scheduled for the summer of 2011. Weddings are a tremendous opportunity to reach a wider audience by branding the base of each cupcake.
With a heavy heart
I would like to sell the company as my daughter is growing up and needs my time and attention. Furthermore, as cupcake sale volumes increase it’s becoming more difficult to bake from home.
Horseshoe Bakery has a lot of potential to expand both horizontally and vertically – increasing its range of products (there are a lot of new areas to explore, such as Whoopie Pies, macaroons and baking with fruit and vegetables) and opening a shop.
The bakery can be transferred to any geographical area. Unfortunately cupcakes can’t be posted. They can only delivered by hand, hence the delivery charges shown at the bottom of the menu page on the website. In my experience most people like to collect from Beaconsfield.
Health and Safety
The Horseshoe Bakery has been inspected by an environmental health officer from South Bucks District council. Whoever takes it over will need to complete a level 2 Food Safety course, which is a day long course held in at South Bucks district council offices in Denham at a cost of around £370.
Your premises will need to be inspected by an environmental health officer before production begins. The horseshoe bakery has professional indemnity insurance and public liability insurance which is required by most event organisers. This is easy to set up and costs around £13 per month.
Sale
The sale will include the following:
• The website (www. Horseshoebakery. Com), which includes online ordering and payment via paypal (a percentage of each sale is deducted by paypal). This also includes debit and credit card payments. I will also update the address on the website. Orders arrive via email. The paypal account will be redirected to you and your bank account. The Horseshoe bakery also has a Facebook page, which updates the homepage, so all events, new products and news are updated on friends pages.
• A list of suppliers and customers.
• An exhibition box which includes canvas banners, two trestle tables and navy blue table cloths made to fit the trestle tables. 4 embroidered branded aprons. Baskets and display equipment. A bright light and extension lead.
• Promotional material – A5 leaflet (approx 1, 000). These only contain the website address and are transferable.
• All stock (sugar decorations for Christmas and Haloween and other events), piping bags, cupcake cases, sugar paste in 8 different colours.
• Boxes (dozen, half dozen and 4's), ribbons and cellophane
• Tins for mini, regular and giant cupcakes and a Gordon Ramsay five litre direct drive mixer.
• Lessons in cupcake baking if required!
I am looking for approximately £2, 500 for the bakery as a going concern, but all offers will be considered. | | | | | | UNDER OFFER | | | | | | | | | | | |
