Originally designed by a leading furniture designer from a brief arising from the problems associated with the inaccessibility and lack of stability of conventional ‘A-frame’ picnic benches, this award winning table range has now become the benchmark for accessible outdoor furniture, with the distinct advantage of disabled access.
Around the world, many thousands of the traditional ‘A-frame’ design benches are produced every year despite their fundamental failings. The acceptance of the design is such that the symbol has become synonymous with and is even used to depict off-road picnic areas. Careful consideration of the functional requirements, the ergonomics and their siting led to the development of the radical Winer Diner concept which addressed and solved the problems associated with the old ‘A-frame’ design.
The Winer Diner picnic suite features a tripod design, craftsman built from sustainable resource hard or soft woods or recycled plastic with the option of either timber or box section steel legs. The three legged design provides a stable support, which does not rock on uneven surfaces. With its fixed cantilevered seats, it allows easy access and provides space for three wheelchairs – spaces that alternatively can also be used for extra seats if required, giving the table a potential 9-seat capacity.
Since its launch the design has proved enormously popular and successful, both with the general public and with the industry, from which it has received many accolades, including the NEC International Garden and Leisure Exhibition Best New Product Award in 1997 and in 1998 the Best Outdoor Product Award from the UK Garden Industry Manufacturer’s Association.
The design is currently registered throughout major European countries, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The registered trade mark for the brand name ‘Winer Diner’ has also been registered in the UK and the European Community. Licenses for the manufacture and marketing of the furniture itself have been granted to three organizations for various territories and target customers, all of which are due to expire in the next few years. In the UK this has resulted in the furniture being purchased by a wide range of customers including the major brewers and licensed premises operators, Mitchell & Butler, Whitbread, Scottish and Newcastle as well as numerous independent outlets.
The Leck Design models, introduced in 2006, have been created to appeal to the budget conscious sector of the market whilst retaining all the ergonomic advantages of the Winer Diner design. Two licensees have recently been appointed to promote these new designs which already provide a significant royalty revenue.
With limited promotion the Winer Diner & Leck Design concept will generate £65,000 in royalties during the current calendar year – over £300,000 of royalties having been generated to date. Conservative estimates suggest a royalty income approaching £2.5m over the next ten years. As such this represents a significant investment opportunity for an indoor or outdoor furniture manufacturer already involved in the catering or hospitality sector looking for an award winning product to add to its portfolio or alternatively an Investor seeking to generate a generous return on the investment of an initial capital sum.
Key strengths:
These are award winning, unique table designs with worldwide trademark and design registrations. These design registrations are legally enforceable having been tested on a small number of occasions and on each occasion the the infringement was successfully prosecuted. They significantly improve upon the performance, comfort and accessibility of items of garden furniture used in volume in thousands of outlets in the UK, not to mention the rest of the world.
The designs have proved enormously popular and successful both with the general public and purchasers which have included many of the larger chains of retail licensed premises, many of which have become regular purchasers – a position that is likely to be strengthened even further by recent legislation – disabled access and the banning of smoking in all indoor public areas, for example.
Creating reasonable revenues per annum from a limited licensee base – this opportunity has generated in excess of £300,000 of revenues to date.
Key opportunities:
There is an outstanding opportunity to build on the existing revenue stream generated by this intellectual property. With strong demand for products of this kind across a number of sectors – Councils for parks and picnic areas, education establishments, pubs etc – almost any public space, combined with a capacity to increase revenue, a new owner of the trademarks and design registrations, contributing fresh ideas, motivation, enthusiasm and commitment will have every advantage of building on an excellent platform. The current projection for royalty revenues from existing licensees alone, suggests an income in excess of £2m over the next ten years.
Whilst this is an on-going project involving the possibility of exploring alternative materials and manufacturing techniques, there is certainly the feeling that the existing licensees are not exploiting the potential of the current opportunity to the full. Greater marketing and advertising and more aggressive selling would undoubtedly increase their turnover and profitability, with an attendant impact on royalties. The public house sector in particular is certainly an area for expansion – the recent introduction of the ‘No smoking ban’ in public areas, the greater reliance on food revenues within the sector and the increasing trend towards eating out and ‘alfresco’ dining in the UK are all combining to boost demand for this type of product. Any business manufacturing or marketing the Winer Diner’ is ideally placed to take advantage of this trend – and the design registration owner, likewise.
Outside the corporate sector, there is also the possibility of selling the product into the domestic market via the DIY “sheds”, for example.
