The business produces a high quality family information magazine with a wealth of useful articles including practical parenting advice, child related issues, health and beauty, reader competitions etc. plus lots of topical and local information. It is published three times a year and distributed free via local Schools, Supermarkets, Hospitals, Leisure Centres, doctor’s surgeries, baby clinics, libraries and their advertisers.
Revenue is derived mainly from local and national advertising sales on a one off, repeat or series basis, and a variety of size and colour options are available to our clients depending on their budgets.
There is a group website which has lists and links to all current advertisers’ websites to complement their magazine advertisement (www.abcmag.co.uk). It has a dedicated area for Essex and each of the other counties.
The original concept goes back to 1996 and is now a proven working model produced successfully in eight different franchised areas by operators who had no previous experience of publishing or marketing.
This particular franchise was originally started in November 2005 and has grown steadily since then. Despite working on a part-time basis the owner has managed to build it into a profitable and thriving business.
Location
The franchise territory covers the whole of Essex and the new owner would ideally live in Essex.
Premises
A great benefit of this business is that it is run from home, which means it is easily relocatable, and the usual business overheads of rent, rates etc. are not incurred.
Assets
Everything required to run the business is provided.
This includes a computer, professional printer, bespoke customer management software, Adobe C2 Suite, MS Office and various utilities packages. Secured future sales currently worth £4,000.

Marketing
Since the business is already established, there is good market awareness of the product, and an ongoing loyal base of advertisers and readers. Currently 79% of advertisers re-advertise and there is over £4000 of revenue booked in for the next issue. To maintain and grow the business marketing will be required. This will involve speaking to potential clients from a database of prospective clients who have been contacted previously and shown an interest in ABC Essex. The ABC model is to hire self-employed sales people who are able to hep grow the business on a commission only basis.
Training and Support
No previous publishing experience is necessary, but computer literacy would be an advantage. Full computer, commercial and administrative training will be provided free during the transition period. Furthermore, because existing data and DTP templates are already in place, an efficient changeover should be possible, with handholding from the present owner and with regular support and advice from Head Office.
Turnover
The accounts for 2007 show a turnover of £41,000 with a N.P. of just under £17,500.
Trading Hours
Because of the nature of the business it can be run in normal office hours and around family commitments. With the run up to deadline extra time will be required to deal with the extra administration.
Potential
The business has grown year on year since its inception. This growth looks set to continue and a new owner who is willing to devote their time to the business could significantly increase the earnings, from the current level, as there is vast potential for further expansion. The current owner readily admits that increasing the marketing period to two full time months per edition could realistically see an increase in profits up to 50%. With telesales staff in place this could be 100% increase.
